Professora Jessi Taran, (2 time winner of the US Open in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), 1st place winner of the Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic in BOTH Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as well as submission wrestling, and currently ranked by grapplers.com as the number 1, female BJJ heavyweight in the world) will be teaching an introductory BJJ/submission wresting seminar this coming Wednesday night, at K-1 fitness in San Francisco at 7:00 pm. For almost ten years, Taran has studied under and trained with some of the most well-respected BJJ fighters in the world today, including Ralph Gracie, Renzo Gracie, David Camarillo, Ricardo de la Riva, and Sergio Silva. She is one of only FIVE American women to have ever achieved the rank of Black Belt in the art of BJJ. She also holds a Master's degree in philosophy from the Katholiek Universitat Leuven, in Belgium. She wrote her thesis on 'The Role of Courage in Women's Moral Action'.

Often referred to as 'the world's most practical martial art', Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is grappling based, combative art. Primarily focused on the 'ground game', in recent years, BJJ has won substantial notoriety due to it's unparalleled success in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) venues such as the UFC. Like Judo (which shares a common history), no strikes or kicks are used in Jiu Jitsu. The object of a BJJ match is to achieve a dominant position and immobilize your opponent. This is done by trapping the other person in a submission hold, (usually a joint lock or a carotid artery choke) and applying just enough pressure in order to get him to 'tap out' or verbally submit.

Because of the enormous popularity of televised fight shows such as the UFC and IFL, many people think that BJJ and MMA are the same thing, or that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu's primary importance is it's functionality in winning MMA fights. While it's true that the study of BJJ is an integral element of any MMA fighter's education, it's important to remember that BJJ and MMA are NOT the same thing. Despite it's practicality and proven combat effectiveness, a BJJ match is NOT 'a fight' - it's a GAME, an ART, and a SCIENCE. Only when the art is viewed as a whole, and not just as a means to an end (i.e. : cool submission holds for MMA fights... ) can the beauty, complexity, and subtle, non-verbal, truths that lie at the heart of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, be fully understood and appreciated .

Professora Taran is the co-founder of the Open Door Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy in Oakland, California, where she has been teaching for the past four years. She currently teaches at both the Open Door Academy in Oakland, and also at World Jiu Jitsu in Marin. Taran's stated goal is to make the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu accessible to ANYONE who wants to train, regardless of age, fitness level, gender, or sexual orientation. According to Taran, 'Most BJJ instructors focus the majority of their energy on those students they think have the best chance at becoming tournament champions. Personally, I feel that if a student really wants to compete, that's fine. But if he doesn't want to compete...well...that's fine too! You do learn something from competing in tournaments, but honestly, I really don't see the karmic value of taking a bunch of really tough, athletic, guys, and turning them into really, REALLY tough, athletic, guys. Where's the challenge in THAT, you know? I myself am much more interested in taking regular people of average, or even sub-standard, athletic ability, and giving them something that they never had before, or even knew existed. Now THAT means something! I love seeing how people's lives change when they don't have to worry about feeling afraid anymore. You don't need to be 'tough' in order to be successful at Jiu Jitsu. That's the whole POINT. That's why it's so amazing!'

Aside from her many accomplishments, both as a competitor as well as an instructor, (Taran's students have placed in multiple high level BJJ and submission wrestling tournaments, including the US Open and the Pan American Games) what truly sets the Professora apart from other BJJ instructors, is her precise attention to technical detail, and her 'philosophy of control'. Says Taran, 'Despite popular misconceptions about the art, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is really NOT about injuring or hurting one's opponent; it's about controlling him. We know this because it's the ONLY martial art in which you can spar FULL FORCE, without necessarily getting injured or injuring your opponent. Of course, like any sport, injuries can happen sometimes, but only accidentally. You certainly aren't trying to hurt anyone! As a matter of fact, I believe that if you DO hurt the person you're rolling with, it's same as a loss. This is because both results are ultimately rooted in the same cause - a loss of control. In order to be able to physically control another person stronger or larger than yourself, you must first learn control of your own body. '

While we were away- 2007 Update

As many of your have noticed, we haven't been around for a while. Sales are exponentially up, retailers have come and gone, and come again, and a new crop of Vanderkittens have joined you! So much has been going on, I don't even know where to begin?

In late 2006-2007, we came to the call of Didi Lawrence, professional skier who was critically injured 4 years ago on her quest to become sober from a drug and alcohol addiction. Didi had the dream of skiing in Nepal on mountains never skied before... 4 years earlier she was told she would never be able to walk again!

We latched onto this cause and raised a large part of $11,000 for her to make this trip. It was a magical journey and a great friendship has formed. She achieved her dream, and the "ubiquitous brand" that has been DOING and BEING, once again came through. We raised $2,000 from sales through our web store alone, and Jennie and I personally contributed even more. We are working with Didi on speaking engagements, TV appearances, and just sharing stories and guiding thoughts.

We've also been sponsoring a number of women in the cycling arena. We put up thousands of dollars in prizes and sponsorship monies last season for events, races and causes that define women who kick ass. Don't forget about our ongoing relationships with Divasonic, other DJ's and musicians, as well as promoting and showcasing artists from all over the US.

Infact, we've been SO busy, we haven't had the time to tell anyone about it! No PR blitz, no media hype, just good old fashioned "DO".

I have seem some reviews on the web that suggest we are a flash in the pan, or a hollow brand. I think back to February 2005 when we put in the order for our first run of T's and the goals I set for 5 years. Here we are, 2 years later, and we have surpassed all of our expectations! We did it with the belief, support and encouragement of everyone in this tribe, on our MySpace pages, right down to the guy printing our shirts. You have helped create this new type of business that walks first, and talks second. A kind of business that is driven by spirit over bottom line.

In 2007 we have taken on more people to help Vanderkitten grow, and become even more successful. Our pace is furious, and we don't really care about being the cool, underground thing anymore because we have much more impact globally than locally! In fact, for every T we sell to someone in the bay area, we sell 50 elsewhere.

In 2 months the Vanderkitten Foundation will open. This is a charitable organization spearheaded by Jennie that will provide outreach, exposure, assistance, guidance, training and coaching for women all over the world. We have some incredible corporate partners signing on and we are excited to invite you to as well.

While on my latest spiritual journey, I was given a copy of the movie The Secret. (http://www.thesecret.tv). At first I was skeptical... I didn't know what to expect but decided to watch with an open mind... I started asking some of the more progressive, successful and wealthy people in my life (wealth comes in many forms, as you all know) if they knew of it.

Some of these people had going through a transformation in recent months and their outlook on life had changed in startling contrast to their old selves. One friend had shed his cocoon of negativitiy, found the woman of his dreams (who is a TOTAL Vanderkitten!) and has reclaimed his inner positivity and belief. To my surprise, he had seen The Secret and it helped him break through a time of life that was negative, filled with doubt and a loss of hope.

The more I dig, the more I find people who's lives have encountered this movie, are living the Law of Attraction and don't know it, or have had the movie recommended to them by a friend or stranger.

What is your experience with this movie?

I have the coolest kid with the biggest heart around!!

Let me back track and I will explain, a few days before Christmas Ace came to me with something that was bothering her and asked me to help. She had heard about Phoenix, a pet bunny that was doused with lighter fluid and set on fire in the Bay Area last October. Phoenix survived but only after recieving third degree burns and losing both his ears all because some 19 year old sick basterd didn't have anything better to do with his time. For more about Phoenix please go to the San Francisco/Marin House Rabbit Society Home Page at www.saveabunny.com but please read this alone before you share it with a child, it is very graphic and not for little eyes.

I immedietly called all my friends and asked for help, of course when I told them this was for Ace everyone volunteered. We decided to hold a bachelor-ette auction with everyone saying they could help or they knew so-and-so who was hot and would do anything for animals/children/fun/ect.

So we all picked our jobs and went our separate ways with everyone doing what they do best. The first thing I did was look for a place to hold it. (Thank you Pine Street Bar and Grill for donating your time and space.) The next thing I did was call the House Rabbit Society and tell them what we wanted to do, they were thrilled.

Now it was time to put Ace to work, remember this is her idea. Sometimes it is hard to remember she is only 8yrs old as we go around to all the local bussinesses asking for sponsorship and donations but my once shy child is working it like a pro, lol. Every day she gets out of school, comes home and does her homework and then goes to work. Some days we pick up friends before we go out and other times we go alone but we always do the same thing.

Here is the drill:

Walk into local bussiness, ask to see a manager, wait while they find a manager, then Ace gives over the fliers Mommy has printed up with Phoenix's picture and a little about us then answers all the question she can with Mommy filling in some of the details. Then Mommy gets to watch while this little girl charms the socks off of grown men and women who can't seem to help her out enough.

Her biggest achievement was her talking the manager of Hooters in Dublin out of $350 in gift certificates including a "All You Can Eat Wings Dinner For 10 People"

Each bussiness I take Ace too takes us about 45 minutes and because she hasn't been excused from School while she does this she get's in about three or four stores a day. But that doesn't mean she only works a few hours a day on this. She was bringing home tiny hands full of change every day with stories if how her friends had given up there lunch/pocket money to help Phoenix so I went and talked to her teacher. He rocks too, he let me put in a piggy bank in the classroom so the kids could watch there money combine and grow to help Phoenix and tomorrow I get to go into the classroom and help the kids make art projects to sell at the bunny-fit. They will sell to even if I have to buy every last one of them. I am going into that class on January 30th and telling these kids there hard work and tallent made a difference.

I am also sending home with the children letters to there parents explaining what we are trying to do, how we are doing it and how there kids can help. We are also asking anybody with ideas to get ahold of us. I did make one thing clear in the letter though: what makes this special is it is a childs project she is doing with friends, lets keep it that way.

This little girl has impressed the H*** out of more then just me. I got a phone call yesterday afternoon from a big company that wants to remain unnamed but when I heard about who they were I immedietly went into a big speach of how this was not my project and this is what is being done by an 8yr old ect. ect. I spoke for about 5 minutes before the lady told me that she had called to tell me the company doesn't fund local charity's but she was so impressed she asked permission for her personally to send Ace a gift. I know what it is but I am not going to tell, it is a suprise for the bunny-fit

The biggest suprise to me is the House Rabbit Society asked for a picture they could publish on there web sight of Ace doing some of her work. Please watch there web sight at www.saveabunny.com if you are interested in more of this story. I don't know what they are doing or when it will get done but they are doing something. I think she is special but to have someone else confirm it just makes me so happy. I spoke to Marcy of the House Rabbit Society and we are trying to get Ace and Phoenix together to meet but it will be hard. You see, I don't really drive, I am a small town girl and Bay Area traffic freaks me out but Ace and I have been invited to the Society to see exactly who and what we are working to help. I know meeting Phoenix would mean the world to Ace and I am going to try to make it happen.

In the mean time we have a little over two weeks until the bunny-fit so Ace and I will continue to go door to door and bussiness to bussiness asking everyone we meet to help so if you see us stop and say "hi" but don't be suprised if you get handed a flier and asked to help us spread the word.

If you have read this and you have any inclination to help please contact me and I will get back to you as soon as possible. There is so much Ace is doing that I just couldn't talk about in here but she is working her little A** off for this.

Ace's personal goal is to make enough money that Phoenix can have the surgery he needs on what is left of his ears. They are closing up with scar tissue and need to be surgicly cleaned up so they don't fill with fluid and he can keep the hearing he has left. We are doing good but I am not sure we can do this alone.

I am personally asking everyone who reads this, as a Mother and an animal lover, to look into your heart and see if there is anything you can do to help. You may have something that can be sold at auction or maybe you can give a donation or maybe you can show up and suport Ace's cause the day of the Bunny-fit. Anything you can do would be gratefully accepted.

This started out as me humoring my daughter but it has turned into so much more. Now my friends and I are making a political statement:

Live Life Fashion - We need some models

Hey Guys,

So only like David knows about this cause we've been keeping this on the low, but i'm happy to announce that we've begun a new venture called "Live Life" fashion.

We've printed our first few shirts and displayed them at 2 events in the last week, and have gotten great response. We're working on our website and a photoshoot soon. Which means that I need models.

If some of you girls/guys model, and are in the bay area. Please contact me and send me your headshot/resume :) Looking for diverse array of models for our site, especially ones that can help define the meaning of "Live Life". I'll post our pre-mission statement below.

I'm setting up for a shoot in the next few weeks for our launch. And if any of you guys need some silk screening down, please hit me up. We have our own print facilities here in San Jose, CA.

100% KICK ASS WEEKEND!

So, in case you've been sleeping on the Tribe, here is an update of stuff we've been up to:

-We donated approximately $800 worth of our clothes to Beat for Boobs to help raise money for Breast Cancer last month (my mother is a surviver).

-We donted a stack of shirts, about 20, to the US's oldest Motorcycle Club, the SFMC as give-aways for their annual fund-raiser.

-We are sponsoring the Surf City Cyclocross and USGP#5 bicycle races in the Santa Cruz area with the all-women's cycling team, team Velo Bella ( http://www.velobella.com ) We are donating shirts and offering ViP deals to the entire team.

-We are participating in Digital Bliss, 2005, a festival of Women in Electronic Music on November 11th, 2005. We are helping with design, t-shirt production and will have a table at the event. The event is to promote women who create music electronically and is produced by Lynda Arnold, AKA: Divasonic who is a Vanderkitten ViP!

How do we choose what we participate in? Through recommendations through people like YOU!! So, if you know of an event you think we might be interest in, DROP US A LINE!!

So, in case you haven't noticed, a big part of what we are all doing here is learning, exploring and exposing new and different things. What Vanderkitten is doing is developing a player for the Vanderkitten site where people can got and listen to new, up and coming artists, DJ's and more!

I am trying this out linking to my friend Dee's Myspace.com player. This will appear on the website later today under Community, but there will be a link on the home page to it.

If you or your friend is a musician, I would love to get a sample of what is going on! I am planing the first issue of the player to feature: Divasonic, Dee, Havis and am looking for a couple more artists who are looking to get exposure.

So, it's July 20th, and about 6 months ago I decided to see how far my credit card could take me in starting a dream company. This company was not based on a sport, or an art, or really anything more than a weave of energy women share. Inspired by my wife Jennie and many people I have met throughout my life, I decided to give this whole thing a GO!

So, 6 months later, we have 1000's of T's, hundreds of happy ViP's, and some local artist and people we admire in our gear!

As I reflect, it is important that YOU believe in what we are doing, creating a company whose brand promise talks about empowerment and synergy, collaboration and self-assurance. If you surf, we're with you. If you vote, we're with you. If you sing in the shower, just loud enough for your neighbors to hear, we're with you. It's all about you, and your journey to become the best you can be, questioning authority, questioning reality and striving for your piece of the pie, whatever pie that is!

Vanderkitten is already a success! The first T-shirt we sold was the first taste of it. I am starting to hear reports of people seeing other out in Vanderkitten T's, and that is to me what makes the full-time job and design work to pay the bills, and then the other 40 hours a week on Vanderkitten all worth it... it's about the word, and you're spreading it, and I love you all for it!!

If you are here in this tribe, it's because you love Vanderkitten! So let's talk about some great things you can do to help support Vanderkitten:

1. Wear their gear! If you love it, show your support by ordering your own shirt... and wear it often!

2. Put their stickers and logos on things in your world. Need more stickers or other marketing materials- talk to Dave about bartering for them.

We have some T's in various sizes that are seconds from production runs gone amuck! Anyhow, we feel most of them look good from a few feet away, BUT THAT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!

The MESSENGER RINGER is going bye bye for a while, which means all remaining messenger ringers are going to be $8 on the ViP site TOMORROW, June 16th!! . I have to cut back on styles and colors, so they are going cheap/fast.

Underground Raglan- The Kelly Green/Lemon cap sleeves are gonna be similarly priced. I have to work on the pages, but it will be the cheapest deals EVER!! Time to clear out the bins! Remember, suggested retail on these is $28, so it's a HELL of a deal!

Mission Ringer: M-XL in Sky/Sky heather (I love it!) and Mint/Mint Heather will be $10 tomorrow as well!

Caveat: all T's must be shipped, and all have to pay sales tax who are in California!

Something Useful: High Fructose Corn Syrup

Apparently, HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) is now being blamed for much of the out of control overweight and obesity issues in the US. I have always known this is pretty bad for you, but there is a movement to have it banned from use! Apparently the biggest problem is it is so ultra refined (it's not a naturally occuring sugar, but a derivative made in a lab like frankenstien) this hammers your pancreas, sending blood sugar levels to the moon!

When this happens, the pancreas dump insulin into your blood stream which then stimulates the immediate conversion of this simple sugar to fat. HFCS is found in practically every fast food item, soft drink, juice, candy, sweets, cereal, etc. I have been doing my best to SIMPLY CUT THIS OUT of my diet, maintain my meager work-out existence and have been amazed how fast I am trimming down.

SO, what totally pissed me off: I am trying to eat better, snack on bran cereal (I am not a Nazi, I just want to be healthier), and it was late... I went to safeway and bought Kellog's All Bran cereal... 2nd ingredient is: HFCS, those BASTARDS!!

I just wanted to share this with you all, it's not new news to most of you but a good reminder: Read the Labels! Look for dehydrated cane juice and unrefined sugar instead... white grape juice is also SUPER SUGARY and should be avoided as well! (You know, Gatorade has less than half the sugar of soda and does not contain HFCS in most flavors...). -Dave

Incidentally, I was wondering if there are plans to offer the Vanderkitten T's in larger sizes? I'd love to wear 'em and get Chicago Vanderkitten-ed, but I'm just a little too large to wear the skinny tops. :) Working on it, though. Still, it'd be nice to spread the Kitten love ASAP. :)

The Photoshoot featured many prototypes of new designs! We are finally introducing some striped summer totes in Pink and Blue with the Lisa Marie design! These will be available in 3 weeks.

We are offering zip-front, black, hoodies which are AWESOME!! These will feature the Robophelia print on the left chest. These are the softest, fleece lined cotton hoodies we have ever felt. THE DEAL on New Designs Ship Date

Hey all of you Sassy Kittens!

A number of you ordered the new designs on the pre-order site and the ViP site. They have not shipped yet. Infact, the printer that was going to do them is no longer going to be my printer. 6-7week turnaround for shirts, major loss of product due to poor quality control means I have scouted a new vendor who is LOCAL!

So, here is the deal: I have met with and selected a new vendor who is local. The Artwork goes off to them tomorrow, and the turn is gauranteed at 3 weeks max. I know this sounds late, but the order I placed a month before I put the Pre-order site up has not even been shipped by my current vendor (the same one that F'd everything up), so there is no hope they can deliver the new designs!

T's will arrive and ship pronto! The idea with the ViP site is cheap tee's might compensate for a long wait. But fear not, we're all in the same boat on the new prints! Thanks for your patience and support!

One of my local friends/barista Loui always has neat tee shirts on. She is also awesome, and people really seem to like her (I do, fo shizzle).

I offered her a Vanderkitten T to sport while she works. She gave me her favorite T-shirt, and American Apparel ringer. It was too hard to send one T to the printer (they can barely get my order correct now).

I made Loui the first Robophelia T using a transfer at home. I dropped the T off to her at work, and within 2 minutes of her changing into it, a customer was asking her WHERE DID SHE GET THAT SHIRT?! Simple, told him about the site, he emailed me, and ordered a shirt for a relative. I threw in a Birthday Girl card and sent it off to Washington DC.

His neice, upon getting the shirt, put it on and took a picture of herself and sent it to him thanking him!

IT WORKED!!!

Hand printed Tanks and T's- KIDS TOO!

I am going to start an offering of Tanks and T's with images I apply here at home. I have done some samples they look great! (Of Robophelia, of course LM!!)

I'll post some pics and let you know hot to get one! Price will be similar, but runs will be smaller and more flexible. Image quality is great! KIDS TOO!! The idea is just cool, small-run, very limited edition stuff.

More when I get it figured out, but I expect to have T's in 2 days... EX: OLIVE ANYONE?! Sydnee, tank girl? There are certain constraints to the image size and design I can do... but it looks sweet so far!

Saturday, MAY 14th and Sunday May 15th we have set aside for the photoshoot!!!
We will probably start at 10am and go through 5-6pm. Saturday evening I am planning on having a little party back here at the world headquarters in Oakland with specail appearances by Opheila Vanderkitten and Chubby Belly Kitten (unless they hide under the bed all night).

Depending on how much we shoot Saturday will determine Sunday's schedule.

What I need from you:
If you are planning on coming, I need an RSVP and your T-shirt size. I need to get everything set aside for the shoot now and fill-in the missing T's!

So, I have noticed the people who recieved Tribe blogs are no longer posting very frequently on the Tribes I am on... which is lonely. Part of the fun was reading and responding to people's thoughts in a forum.

Alas, call me old fashion, but I think the Blogs on Tribe, while offering individuals a greater realm of self-expression, might be the very undoing of tribe.net.

I see it as compartmentalizing the world... people will say more but speak to fewer. Perhaps that is progress... that's my Blog Bitch for Wednesday.

NIN blew up the Warfield with the Dresden Dolls...

Probably one of the best shows I have ever seen, period. The Dresden Dolls were AWESOME as the opening band for NIN. Our own Whitney has some history with the Dolls. They were excellent, so talented and very theatrical. Just awesome.

Trent did not missed a beat. He took the stage and then took over the Warfield. He never stopped for their hour and half long set mixing some soon to be released song with classics (Head Like a Hole) and ripped the sh$t out of everything. They left everything out on stage, I can't imaging how the hell they can do that 2 nights in a row!

Anyhow, we paid $75 for our tickets on ebay (OUCH!), but it was worth every penny! They play tomorrow night, too, and I am highly recommending scalping some tickets! They go on at 9, so you want to find your nook by 8:40pm. Their cocktails were also surprisingly potent! Overall excellent time!
